🌧️ What Happened in Sri Lanka vs Nepal?
Heavy rain affected the cricket programme at Korogi Sports Park, where earlier men's quarterfinals had also been abandoned because of weather conditions.
The persistent rain left the outfield and playing surface unsuitable for the scheduled Sri Lanka vs Nepal quarterfinal.
The match was therefore abandoned without a ball being bowled. There was no toss, no innings and no official match score.
The result was decided according to the tournament's knockout qualification rules for an abandoned quarterfinal. With Sri Lanka ranked higher in the ICC T20I rankings, Sri Lanka progressed to the semifinal.
⏰ When Was the Match Cancelled?
The match was officially called off at approximately 08:20 JST, around 40 minutes before the scheduled 09:00 JST start.
The conditions meant that the teams did not reach the toss and no delivery was bowled.
🇱🇰 Why Did Sri Lanka Advance?
Sri Lanka advanced because the tournament regulations use the ICC T20I ranking to determine progression when a men's quarterfinal is abandoned without a result.
Before the match, Sri Lanka was ranked 9th in the ICC men's T20I rankings, while Nepal was ranked 14th.
As a result, the higher-ranked Sri Lankan side received the semifinal qualification when the quarterfinal could not be played.
The same ranking-based mechanism had already been used after the Pakistan vs Hong Kong and India vs Afghanistan quarterfinals were abandoned on September 28. The ICC reported that Pakistan and India progressed respectively as the higher-seeded teams.
🇳🇵 Nepal's Asian Games Cricket Campaign
Nepal entered the quarterfinal after finishing at the top of Group A.
Nepal defeated Afghanistan by five wickets in its opening match and then saw its match against hosts Japan abandoned because of rain.
Against Japan, Nepal scored 149/4 from 15 overs before rain prevented Japan from beginning its chase.
The washout against Sri Lanka ended Nepal's hopes of reaching the Asian Games cricket semifinals.
🇳🇵 Stuart Law Reacts to the Washout
Nepal head coach Stuart Law had expressed concern before the match about the lack of a reserve day for the cricket quarterfinals.
Speaking to the Kathmandu Post before the match, Law described the possibility of an elimination through a rain washout as “brutal” for Associate nations.
He also acknowledged that the ranking system exists because higher-ranked teams have accumulated more international results, while arguing that Nepal's objective is to continue climbing the rankings.
🇱🇰 Sri Lanka Advance to the Semifinal
Sri Lanka now moves into the Asian Games 2026 Men's Cricket semifinal.
The semifinal opponent and schedule should be followed through the official Asian Games competition results and schedule pages as the knockout bracket is confirmed.
